Google is about to Shutdown Google Reader on July 1, 2013

Posted by Muhammed Posted on Saturday, March 16, 2013
As part of second spring of cleaning, Google is about to shut down one of the world's most popular service Google Reader. The service will not be available after July 1, 2013.

Google says “We launched Google Reader in 2005 in an effort to make it easy for people to discover and keep tabs on their favorite websites. While the product has a loyal following, over the years usage has declined. So, on July 1, 2013, we will retire Google Reader. Users and developers interested in RSS alternatives can export their data, including their subscriptions, with Google Takeout over the course of the next four months.”

Using Google Takeout, you'll receive your subscription data in an XML file, and the following information will be downloaded as JSON files:

  • List of people that you follow
  • List of people that follow you
  • Items you have starred
  • Items you have liked
  • Items you have shared
  • Items shared by people you follow
  • Notes you have created
  • Items with comments
Click here to start downloading your Reader data from Takeout. Once downloaded, your subscription data should be easily transferrable to another product, where you can continue to keep up with your online reading.
Personally I love to use Google Reader but it’s time to look for an alternatives. Besides Google Reader, the company has announced to close down its several other products including Google Voice App for Blackberry, Google Cloud Connect and Google Building Maker as part of second spring of cleaning.

Lenovo IdeaTab A2107A Review

Posted by Muhammed Posted on Thursday, March 14, 2013
IdeaTab A2107
The 7-inch Lenovo IdeaTab A2107 is much similar to the Lenovo IdeaTab A2109A tablet. The $235 tablet offers 16GB of expandable storage and 3G connectivity. The IdeaTab A2107A is set to compete with other 7-inch tablets including Barnes & Noble Nook HD, Kindle Fire HD and Google Nexus 7.

Design and Hardware

It is a cheap tablet just like the Lenovo IdeaTab A2109A. However, the 11.5mm device feels quite sturdy: it doesn’t flex or creak. It weighs 400g, so it feels quite heavy. The chassis of A2107A has been designed simply along with a matt black rear and a stylish glass front. On the top there is a micro-USB charging slot, headphone jack and a power button, and there is volume rocker on the right hand side. A microSD slot and two SIM ports are located on top of the rear.

The 7-inch display has a pixel ratio of 169ppi and resolution of 1204 x 600. It is low compared to other tablets such as the Nexus 7, Nook HD and Kindle Fire HD, each of them has a minimum of 1280 x 800 resolution screen. However, you won’t notice much of a difference in the display, as the built-in MediaTek display technology enables sharp, full-bodied colors and rich detail. But the viewing angles are not so great.

Cameras

We must admit that the IdeaTab A2107A has the awful cameras. The 2MP model doesn’t even include a flash. You can alter the scene mode or white balance, apply filters and control the zoom through a slider of the Camera app. You will immediately tell whether you’re in panorama, video or still mode. Unlike with other camera apps, simply tapping anywhere on the screen won’t trigger the camera shutter. For the purpose of video chat there is a front-facing camera of 3.0MP. But, it is quite awful and grainy in low light.

Performance and Battery Life

With strong build quality and built-in 3G connectivity at only $235, there must be a catch somewhere, and that comes in the form of horrible performance. The MediaTek 6575 platform used by the Lenovo IdeaTab is mainly used for budget smartphones. This includes a 1GHz single-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor with dual-SIM capability and MediaTek’s own display technology, which is accompanied by 1GB of RAM. On the Geekbench2 test, it recorded only 368 points, while the Kindle Fire HD and Nexus 7 scored 1,124 and 1,452 respectively. You can notice lag even while swiping between home screens. In SunSpider test, the Nexus 7 finished the test in 1,665ms, while the IdeaTab took 3,037 to complete the test. The company has claimed that the battery will last for 10 hours with W-Fi, or 8 hours with 3G.

Software

The Lenovo IdeaTab A2107A runs the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Though it is not the latest version of Android OS, it is pretty standard at present. Lenovo has also included few of its own tweaks including carousel-effect home screens and other apps like Business, Tools, Games, Social and Media. Some of the preinstalled apps include Docs2Go, Cut the Rope, ooVoo, Norton Security, Evernote, NewsRepublic and Amazon Kindle app. There is also Lenovo’s PrinterShare, a BackupAndRestore utility and a GameTanium games store.

Find the files and folders using the most disk space on your hard drive using WizTree

Posted by Muhammed Posted on Wednesday, March 13, 2013
It would be annoying that you get a warning from windows about a low disk space even you have good hard disk capacity. You may be able to remove this warning temporarily by clearing unwanted files from your computer.   But it would be bit hard to find the large files on the computer which uses more disk space of your hard drive.

Here I would like to share a disk space analyzer tool which you can use to identify the files and folders which uses large space on your hard drive quickly and easy.

WizTree is FREE app and it works well on 32 and 64 bit versions of Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8, but the partition should be in NTFS format. WizTree reads the hard drive's Master File Table (MFT) directly from the disk. The MFT is a special hidden file used by the NTFS file system to keep track of all files and folders on a hard drive. Scanning for files this way completely bypasses the operating system (Windows) and provides a huge performance boost.

WizTree

The main features of the program are :

  • Finds the files and folders using the most space on your hard drive
  • Work VERY Fast! We think it's the fastest application of this type in the world!
  • Finds the top 1000 largest files on your hard drive
  • Sort the contents of your entire hard drive by folder size and optionally delete files and folders

Note: when you remove any files from your computer make sure those are not required for the correct operation of your PC!

Monitoring Websites and Applications With Computer Monitoring Software

Posted by Muhammed Posted on Tuesday, March 12, 2013

If you're worried about what people are doing on your computer while you're not around, then you should look into using Computer Monitoring Software. Maybe you're worried about the websites being visited by members of the family, or the applications being used on your computer at work. Or maybe you'd like to simply monitor your computer in case of unauthorised use or theft.

Whatever the reason for needing to monitor certain aspects of computer activity, most modern computer monitoring applications will be able to help. Keyloggers – simple applications used to log keystrokes in the days of DOS – have evolved to include a whole range of surveillance functions. These days you can monitor almost any computer activity you can imagine.

Monitoring websites and applications is probably the most common reason for wanting to use this type of software, and almost all major developers will monitor both, along with the date and time of visit/use and sometimes the length of visit/use. Usually this information will be accompanied by a screenshot of the application or website. Screenshots will be taken either every time a certain event is triggered (ie a mouse click) or every X amount of seconds. The screenshots will be be accompanied by a label, date and time.

Keystrokes will also be recorded, along with the name of the window (or the website) it was typed into. As before, this information will be reported with the time and date of the entry. Some software can monitor the incoming text from instant messengers or emails, although some will do this simply be capturing a screenshot.

Other information recorded will include any documents or files opened, saved, moved, deleted or printed, anything copied and pasted from the clipboard. All of this will be logged in a database that is easy to read through, especially if you know what you're looking for. Some computer monitoring software may also include parental control filters, for blocking access to certain adult orientated websites. There are keylogger reviews sites that are great for finding a keylogger that suits your needs.

Computer monitoring software is easy to download and install, and once installed will run silently in the background so that anyone using the computer won't know they are being monitored. The user interface is usually accessible using a key combination and password set by the administrator on install. The reports can be viewed either from inside the interface, or by having them emailed to you remotely, so that they can be viewed away from the target computer.

If you're interested in downloading a free trial of computer monitoring software with all of the features mentioned above, check out Gecko Monitor.

How to disable Mass Storage function of USB drives?

Posted by Muhammed Posted on Saturday, March 09, 2013

I wrote an article before about to block unauthorized transfer of files from your computer via USB or CD. Here I would like to share a simple registry tweak to disable Mass Storage function of the USB drives those who don’t want to use third party application.

It is possible that we can disable the USB port from BIOS but this will turn off the ability to use USB Keyboards, Mouse and other devices. So the below registry hack will help you to disable the USB Mass Storage function without affecting other function of USB port.

1. Open the Registry by running the command regedit.exe

2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UsbStor

3. In the right pane, double click on the Start value name and change the value data to 4 to disable the removable USB mass storage device drive access.

4.To enable the Mass Storage function, change back the value of Start to 3.

You are done!!! The change will take effect immediately.

Test it yourself and share your comments.

Business And Importance Of Social Media

Posted by Muhammed Posted on Monday, March 04, 2013
The term social media refers to the medium on the internet through which different individuals interact with each other, share information and form groups. It is defined by the website Wikipedia as “the means of communications among people in which they create, share, and exchange ideas and information to virtual communities and networks.” The same website also talks about the famous theory by Kaplan and Haenlein in their famous article “Business Horizons” which classifies social media into six types as follows:

  • Collaborative projects (e.g.:- Wikipedia)
  • Content communities (e.g.:- You Tube)
  • Virtual worlds (Handipoints)
  • Social Networking web sites (e.g.:- Google+, Facebook)
  • Blogs and micro blogs (e.g.:- Tumblr, Friendfeed)
  • Virtual gaming worlds

Apart from strengthening relationships and simplifying modes of interaction between individuals, Social Media has changed ever before the way business is done. It opened a lot of avenues for small businesses to find their clientele by advertising their products and services to people in different parts of the world.

Global recognition: Many businesses that were limited to their respective regions expanded to farther geographical locations owing to it. It helps building not only personal relationships, but also long-lasting and business associations that will be mutually advantageous for either side. In today’s competitive world, where having business contacts is a must to stay afloat in the market, the social media offers you the easiest way to build your professional network.

Affordability: Another great aspect of it is that it comes mostly at free-of-cost. This allows you host your business profile; in addition to it you can also advertise it in an inexpensive manner. Add pictures of the products you offer and write fascinating content about your business to attract interest of your customers and website visitors.

Viral promotion: Once your brand gets clicked, it will go viral on the social networking web sites. Upload the videos of your products on You Tube and other video networking sites. With these sites, you can also keep in touch with your loyal customers.

Social Media Marketing: Another benefit that your business can get from social media is– there exists several internet marketing strategies to take advantage of social networking sites. For example, social media marketing is an online marketing strategy where you advertise your products with no cost or on a paid basis like Facebook. Upload good pictures and videos of your products and combine them with content to get more exposure. This way, your business gets free advertising through word-of-the-mouth.

Researching product penetration: Gone are the days, when an organisation has to conduct a survey to determine the penetration of its products into its customers. Today, one can get a fair idea about their brand by looking at the number of “likes” and comments of their products on Facebook.

Professional benefits: Several social media web sites like LinkedIn help you to expose your professional skills and relevant experience in a particular field. These sites contribute to a large extent for the professional growth through interacting with other professionals and updating yourself.
Overall, social media has revolutionised business in all the aspects.

5 Top Touchscreen Computers Explored

Posted by Muhammed Posted on Saturday, February 23, 2013
Touchscreens command almost all technologies. With touchscreen smartphones having dominated the market for many years now, and iPad and tablets still growing in popularity – it was only a matter of time before a touchscreen all-in-one computer would become an option for everyone.

To most people, a touchscreen computer can seem as far away from any other computer they’re used to using as a toaster is to a clock. Here we’ve picked out five of the popular touchscreen choices and gone into an overview and added our comments on what we really think. Hopefully this will make picking one that’s right for you easy peasy. So let’s get to it...

Packard Bell oneTwo

Pros – Price, HDMI, doubles as Freeview Tuner
Cons – Touchscreen isn’t brilliant

Comments – This nifty touchscreen computer, the Packard Bell oneTwo, doesn’t offer the best touchscreen quality as other models but it makes up for it in features. It has the ability to connect up to games consoles via the HDMI port and also doubles as a Freeview TV tuner. At around £580, this is a great choice for a student.

Toshiba Qosmio DX730-102

Pros – Connectivity, 3D glasses free, sleek design
Cons – Almost a little too sleek for what’s inside, by no means a stand out model.

Comments – An all round ‘okay’ touchscreen computer, but sadly ‘okay’ is all we can justify describing this model as. By no means is it bad, but likewise, it isn’t anywhere above ‘almost good’. Offering good connectivity and a 3D screen without the need for glasses, perhaps a fun choice for a media lover. As a full time PC, we’d recommend not. As a gadget to play around with, we’d say go for it. But at £999 roughly, we doubt that it is a luxury many can afford.

Dell Inspiron One

Pros – Affordable, great looking piece of kit, more than average screen.
Cons – Poor connectivity and touchscreen lacks in performance which is kind of the point, really)

Comments – When not used solely for the novelty and convenience of the touch screen functionality, this is a great little computer. With a great looking screen and packed with many features you’d expect from a standard PC unit, this is a great all-rounder. It isn’t a WOW factor model, and won’t perform technological miracles, but for those looking for standard and reliable, this is the one. For internet nuts, perhaps not so much – the connectivity can be notable poor.

Sony VAIO Tap

Pros – Great design, usability can’t be knocked.
Cons - Overpriced

Comments – By far a stand out all in one. Offering a brilliantly clear and clarified screen, Windows 8 support, 3 USB ports and a battery that can last long enough to be considered truly portable (it is on the heavy side though), this is a must consider gadget for anyone seriously considering investing in a touch PC. A little overpriced for what you get, but as with all new gadgets, this is usually literally the price you pay for the commodity.

Samsung Series 7 Ultra

Pros – Brilliant screen and touch, HDMI/VGA ports
Cons – Battery is only 8hrs

Comments – Offering one of the best screens on this list, this all in one from Samsung doesn’t disappoint in many areas, if any at all significantly. The screen is bright and clear and the touch screen never falls down when pushed to its limits with multiple applications open.  Sleek but offering great grip, this is the perfect portable. Although the battery life falls slightly shorter than others, at 8hrs, the performance provided is a worthy sacrifice for battery life compromise.

When choosing a touch computer for yourself, this is by no means a be all and end all list, so shop around before making the transition. However, all the brands listed here we have chosen for their proven reliability and for the products they make almost always been up to scratch.
